People say Britain isn't as bad as other countries around the world, but the more I open our eyes the more obvious racism is everywhere. Just the other day a little girl aged 7 or 8, told 2 children, (one British black child and another British brown child) that "only white people can sit here".(here being her classroom table). In the UK, school classrooms are designed to have upto 4 or 5 children sat together around the tables.

The school in question is extremely diverse in language, religion, culture and disability. The classroom teachers are not "White British Europeans". English is not the the common first language spoken by the majority of the parents. I'm sharing this much detail about the school because I know it strives to fight racism from the top down - but even here... Small children are experiencing racism... this little girl was not a "White European" either, but she has already learnt to see and treat people differently.

This learnt racist behaviour is coming from somewhere...probably from home. The teacher used the opportunity to educate the whole class again on why what she said was unexceptable.

Racism is taught so it can be untaught. One person. One story. One day at a time. I know thats not good enough, or fast enough but I'm hoping that if people can commit to one day at a time, it will become part of our everyday routine to fight it everyday.

As alway, thank you for writing and sharing your experiences here. 🙏🙏
