Building a girl
A poem about love

She is my Rory,
We share a golden thread.
It binds us
Coordinating feelings
Feeding our psyche
Creating bonds
Praying that they will last,
Like the ones I use to fantasise about —
Write little stories about —
The kind that can heal an adult.
Melt the sadness of sour milk
Repeating the mantra,
“You are beautiful, I love you”
Daily.
Treading carefully
Building something delicate
With the tenderness of patience,
Repeating the mantra,
“You are clever, keep practising”
Such a fragile thing, patience.
Easily distorted or destroyed.
Easily lost to a foreign host.
Building a girl
One that won’t look for love
Outside her Eden.
Building a girl
Building a girl
Building a girl.
One that won’t be distracted
Or lose her way.
Or make dangerous choices
Repeating the mantra,
“You can be a scientist and a mother”
Building a girl
Takes decades, probably longer.
Wanting to protect her
Fighting the inevitable
Is a mother’s madness.
